STATEMENT & BIOGRAPHY

I rip, cut, and stitch. Blood-colored pantyhose, acting as skin substitutes, become patchworked together in a loose body. I stretch, conceal, and fold. Rituals of hand-sewing form limp piles of limbs or constructions around steel and ceramic bones. Precision of process is a frantic effort of seeking perfection.
How many bodies do I need?
I sew and make; I sew and remake. Metamorphosis and reflection shape my practice, investigating the boundaries between public and private self, echoing a struggle for physical and mental security. I have allowed myself to mutate. I will allow myself not to be digestible. I pervert my insecurities and display bodies born of catharsis and vanity.

Lou Shamblin is a fiber and sculpture artist based in Dayton, KY.
